The furniture and plants are going into Roqué House! In a matter of days, ten families will be able to call the space home.
We want to thank our amazing community for helping to make this possible. Your generosity allowed us to keep this program moving forward this year despite so many challenges. We are also grateful to our incredible partners at Way Finders whose hard work over many years made this dream come true.
By providing safe and stable housing, Roqué House will remove a major systemic barrier to educational success for young parents. But the space will be more than another affordable housing unit. A college counselor and a Teaching Artist will live at Roqué House, working with the residents to organize arts and cultural programming for the community. The student leaders will organize art openings, poetry readings, and public art projects, engaging neighbors in the process. The building will be hub of intellectual and artistic activity organized by students of color. Students’ young children will have the opportunity to live in this environment and have experiences that stimulate their interests and imagination.
Planning for this project began eight years ago and we did not anticipate that Roqué House would open in the midst of a deadly pandemic. We believe that housing and arts are both basic human needs and we are boldly moving forward despite the many challenges ahead. Thank you again so much for supporting this work. We cannot wait to welcome the families who will live and thrive in this special space.
