Scholarship Opportunities!

Care Center Graduates:

The Care Center is pleased to offer two different educational scholarships that each award $500.  You may apply to both of these scholarships if you meet the eligibility criteria described below.

The Care Center Selenia Vazquez Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of Selenia Vazquez, a counselor at The Care Center who grew up in Spanish Harlem in the 1940s.  Although many doors were closed to Selenia making it difficult for her to fulfill some of her dreams, she spent her life opening doors and helping dreams come true for other women.  Through this scholarship, The Care Center is able to keep Selenia’s dream alive.  Any Care Center graduate enrolled in college for spring 2021 is eligible to apply.

The Stephen Schneider STEM Scholarship, administered by The Care Center, is open to any Care Center graduate who has plans to pursue a college degree or career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  A STEM college major is not required but if you apply, your personal statement must demonstrate your plan to focus on STEM after graduation.  Any Care Center graduate enrolled in college for spring 2021 is eligible to apply.

Your completed application for the Selenia Vazquez Memorial and/or STEM scholarships must be delivered to Emily Laufer at The Care Center by Friday, January 8 by 12:00 noon.  The application process and forms for both scholarships are the same.  There are four parts:

  1. Scholarship Application Form (same form for both the Selenia and STEM scholarships)
  2. Personal statement: a one page description of your financial need, your education and career goal, and how the award money would assist in achieving your stated goal. You may use one personal statement for both scholarships but the personal statement must illustrate your STEM interest.
  3. Letter of recommendation: from somebody like a teacher, employer, or counselor.  Don’t wait until the last minute to ask this favor!
  4. Verification of spring 2021 college enrollment: a copy of your spring college schedule or a Verification of Enrollment from your college Admissions Office.

You may choose download this application form or apply online here.

Good luck!  Call me at the number below if you have questions. I’m happy to help!  You can also reach me on Facebook at Tcc Transitional Counselor.

Sincerely,

Emily Laufer

The Care Center gave me hope and a desire for change. They actually cared about me and my child. I quickly earned my GED at 16 years old.
