Cabot Street College

Through our partnerships with both Bard and Greenfield Community Colleges, The Care Center offers a variety of college courses throughout the year at our Cabot Street home. Women can sign up for one — or all! — of these classes.

Through Bard, in addition to the Clemente Course in the Humanities, we’ve offered such courses as Reading for Writers, a 3-credit college class that is perfect for women interested in honing their writing skills — either to prepare for fulltime college or to embark on writing projects of their own.

We also regularly offer 1-credit Special Topics classes, short introductions to a variety of topics, such as: Introduction to Podcasting, This Is Your Democracy, Introduction to Latinx Studies, Making and Keeping a Journal, and Fundamentals of Design.

We collaborated with Greenfield Community College (GCC) to design Humanities 108, a 3-credit college course offered to both our High School Equivalency students and those who have graduated but have not yet matriculated or have had to take a break from their college pursuits. This course is designed to introduce students to an exciting world of big ideas, complex questions, and engaging texts — while improving their reading, speaking, and writing. The course also serves as a great preparation for The Clemente Course for the Humanities and other college level courses.

Since 2021, we’ve also offered other GCC classes that serve as excellent starting points for someone getting ready to embark on fulltime college: English 101, Biology 130: Nutrition, and Introduction to Gender and Women’s Studies.

To find out more about these programs, please contact the program director, Pam Thompson, at 413-532-2900, ext. 121 or pthompson [at] carecenterholyoke.org.

The Care Center gave me hope and a desire for change. They actually cared about me and my child. I quickly earned my GED at 16 years old.
