Teacher

About The Care Center:

The Care Center is a comprehensive and transformative educational program located in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Our mission is to provide opportunities for young mothers and all women facing systemic barriers to resume their education and acquire the education, resources, and skills for lifelong growth, wellness, and economic stability. We offer three integrated programs. Our award-winning high school equivalency program for parents under 24 pairs small-setting HiSET (GED) preparation classes with athletics, art, and poetry. Our highly supportive part-time college courses and fulltime onsite Bard Microcollege Holyoke associates degree program provide opportunities for women of all ages to begin or resume their studies. Support services to aid success include onsite daycare, nurse services, door-to-door transportation, breakfast and lunch, an individual counselor for each student, and housing resources.

Position Summary

The Care Center is seeking a part-time educator to provide small-group and individual instruction in basic reading and writing skills to young mothers aged 14-24 in our high school equivalency preparation program.  The ideal candidate will have a deep belief in the capacity of individuals to grow and succeed; experience supporting adolescent/adult learners in building core reading and writing skills; and a commitment to a strengths-based learning approach.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group tutoring for between three to six students in reading, writing, and foundational literacy skills.
  • Administer informal reading and writing assessments to identify skill levels and learning needs.
  • Design engaging lessons, practice activities, and individualized support.
  • Maintain clear, supportive notes on student progress and areas of growth.
  • Adjust tutoring strategies based on student data and ongoing observations.
  • Work closely with classroom teachers to align tutoring with current curriculum and learning goals.
  • Communicate regularly with the academic team about student strengths, challenges, and progress.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to The Care Center’s mission and values and to supporting the communities The Care Center serves.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience using evidence-based reading and writing instruction, such as phonics for adolescent/older learners, fluency development, comprehension strategies, and structured writing supports.
  • Ability to work closely with classroom teachers, counselors, and student support staff to create coherent academic plans.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • ESOL experience a dream come true.

Hours, Location and Compensation 

This is a part-time in-person position Monday-Friday from 9a-12p, with the possibility of moving to full-time. The rate of pay is $25.00-$30.00 per hour depending on qualifications.
