Photos and Reflections from the 20th Young Parents Regatta

On an unusually cool morning in late August, The Care Center held its 20th Young Parents Regatta at Holyoke Rows Boathouse. Care Center students competed against crews from Chelsea and Springfield in singles, doubles and teams of four.

Anne Teschner, Executive Director at The Care Center described the importance of The Care Center’s rowing program. “Even after two decades of watching young mothers row, I am still moved each and every time I see a young mother on the water. We hear again and again from alumni that rowing was the turning point that helped them understand their own power and potential.”

Two decades ago, The Care Center’s athletic program was launched with Rowing Strong, Rowing Together. In this challenging and inspiring program, young mothers train in team and single crew shells on the Connecticut River with experienced coaches in preparation for the annual Young Parents Regatta.

Students who participate in the rowing program have transformative experiences. Some talk about how being in the boat has taught them to be more patient with their friends and their children. Others speak about the sense of tranquility that they felt on the water, and the sustenance they received from it. Some come to better understand the need for cooperation and teamwork. Others simply express how satisfying the work of rowing was for them.

These expansive opportunities happen in our other athletic offerings as well. Depending on the year and season, our electives may include rowing, bowling, cardio hip hop, swimming, wally ball, golf, skiing, yoga, and Zumba.

Below are a few of the powerful women who competed in the 20th Young Parents Regatta!

Brenda Perez Gomez
“I am so proud that we were able to win our race. I was a little scared and nervous, but it was a very good experience.” -Brenda Perez Gomez, Care Center student (left)
Aaliyah Pereira
“I loved going rowing because it was really good exercise and a good distraction. I went from 200 lbs to 150 lbs, and I was very proud of myself for that. I couldn’t have done it without this great rowing experience. I would definitely do it again.” -Aaliyah Pereira, Care Center student (left)
Daniela Ortiz
“The rowing program was fun! It was hard at first but I have learned a lot about rowing and also about myself. I learned about the importance of having confidence in myself to try new things.” -Daniela Ortiz, Care Center student (left)
Nicholle Downey
“It was a new found passion, something I probably wouldn’t have ever done. I feel very fortunate I got the opportunity and look forward to continuing next year! I absolutely love rowing and want to continue to do it!” -Nicholle Downey, Bard Microcollege Holyoke student

The Care Center gave me hope and a desire for change. They actually cared about me and my child. I quickly earned my GED at 16 years old.
